What kinds of companies does UNITY USA invest in?
With deep operating experience in technology, we invest broadly in companies that, for the most part, offer products or services that can be categorized as a ‘technology solution’. We tend to focus on hard-to-do, disruptive technologies - innovative ideas that have the potential to create a significant market impact.
Not every brilliant idea is web-based, as such we also invest in other worthwhile industries. We carefully look at all propositions to ensure there is a good match between our investors, our expertise and the entrepreneur’s goals.
When, how much does UNITY USA invest?
The great majority of the companies we work with are at the earliest stages of development. We typically provide seed capital to people with a compelling idea and a plan.
We have invested as little as $10K to help develop an idea. We also invest at later stages, providing up to $5 million per round. However, we only provide further financing to companies we already have a relationship with, generally companies we had worked with from the start up stage.
Where does UNITY USA operate?
We invest worldwide, with the U.S. being our primary focus and center of operations.
I want to invest, what is the minimum amount? How much control do I have? Can I choose how much of my investment would go to which entrepreneur?
Unlike most VC firms, we prefer individuals as investors as opposed to institutions, pension funds and other corporate entities. Because of securities laws, we avoid participating in the types of offerings that reduce, or eliminate completely the investor’s control over their investment.
We have invested as little as $10K in an idea. A typical investment would be in the $1M to $5M range.
Our transparent approach means as an investor you take an active role in the entire process, from choosing which company you want to invest in and determining valuation, to structuring the board and approving the cost/revenue model. Of course, your team will comprise technology and operational experts who are very intimate with the industry we are investing in.
How soon will I see a profit? What kind of terms should I expect?
As part of the evaluation process, we may hire consultants to conduct a thorough examination of highly technical products, contact future vendors and customers to validate the business plan. Funding a company is a highly selective process, as such only a small percentage of propositions are accepted.
We generally look for business models that point to at least a 20% return on investment, with break-even occurring in the first three years. Of course, every investment will have a different risk/return profile.
We hire auditors and attorneys to report financial positions and confirm compliance with securities laws and regulations.
